Online marketplaces in Australia in 2026: TikTok Shop, Amazon, Temu and the new retailer marketplaces, compared for baby, toy and home brands

TikTok Shop still has no Australian storefront, Amazon keeps gaining shoppers, eBay keeps losing them, and big local retailers have opened their websites to outside sellers. Here is which marketplace is worth boarding first if you sell cots, strollers, toys or home goods.

In October 2026, the online marketplaces in Australia worth a baby, toy or home brand's time are Amazon Australia and the newer retailer marketplaces run by Myer, Big W and Baby Bunting. TikTok Shop has not launched here and has no announced date, so use TikTok to be discovered, not to check out. Temu now takes local sellers, but its shoppers come for low prices. Start with one marketplace, keep your own website, and add a second only when the first is paying for itself.

BOARDING PASS

Australians already shop on marketplaces: in Pattern's 2026 survey, 93% had bought from one in the past 12 months. So the question for a new brand is not whether to use a marketplace but which one, and the map keeps changing. Catch and MyDeal have closed, Myer and Big W have opened their websites to outside sellers, and TikTok Shop is still "coming soon". This article follows on from our guide to choosing launch channels and our year-one cost checklist. Here we look only at marketplaces: what has changed, and where shoppers are actually going.

GATE1

Which online marketplaces in Australia can a new brand sell on in 2026?

Announcement

Amazon Australia, eBay, Temu's local seller program and the retailer marketplaces of Myer, Big W and Baby Bunting are open; TikTok Shop is not, and Catch and MyDeal have closed.

Read the market like a departures board. Some flights are boarding, some are new routes, one has no departure time and two have been cancelled. The board below shows the status in October 2026 and what each marketplace asks of a seller.

Six marketplaces are open to a new consumer brand, and the newest routes are run by Australian retailers, not global platforms.

STATUS AT OCTOBER 2026
  • Amazon AustraliaOpen to brands and resellers. Professional plan A$49.95 a month plus a referral fee by category (8–13% for baby, toys and home).BOARDING
  • eBay AustraliaOpen. Still large, but used by fewer shoppers each year (see gate 2).BOARDING

  • MyDealClosure announced by Woolworths in 2025.CANCELLED
Sources: Amazon Australia selling fees (2026); retailbiz, 18 July 2025 (Temu); Internet Retailing, 10 November 2023 (Big W Market); AAP, March 2026 (Myer); Baby Bunting FY26 annual report; AdNews 2024 and Social Tale, 2 October 2026 (TikTok Shop); closure announcements reported in 2025 (Catch, MyDeal).

The useful pattern is that the new routes come from retailers parents already trust. Myer said in March 2026 that its new marketplace would add bulky goods such as prams, cots and mattresses, which are exactly the products our clients sell, and its marketplace sales rose 9.3% in the first half of FY26. One thing to know: in Pattern's survey, 34% of Australians did not realise that sites like Bunnings, Woolworths, Kmart and Big W sell products from outside sellers. Shoppers will judge the retailer by your parcel, so retailers choose sellers carefully. Expect to show safety test reports and stock held in Australia before you are approved.

GATE2

Where are Australian shoppers going: Amazon, eBay or Temu?

Announcement

Towards Amazon and the low-price apps: Amazon's reach rose from 52% to 60% of shoppers between 2023 and 2026, while eBay fell from 62% to 51%.

A marketplace is only worth joining if shoppers are arriving, not leaving. Pattern's 2026 Marketplace Consumer Report asked Australians which marketplaces they had bought from in the past year. Read the chart like a flight path: each line starts at the earlier survey and ends where the platform is now.

Amazon has climbed past eBay since 2023, while eBay and Kogan are descending.

Source: Pattern, 2026 Marketplace Consumer Report, as published by Pattern Australia (April 2026), retailbiz (February 2026) and Value Added Resource (February 2026). Kogan's earlier figure is from 2024. These reports gave no earlier figures for Temu and Shein, so they are shown at 2026 only.

Two readings matter for a consumer brand. First, Amazon is now where most Australians compare products, so a listing there doubles as the price check shoppers will run anyway. Second, eBay's falling reach does not make it useless, especially for clearing end-of-line stock, but it is no longer the obvious second channel it was a few years ago. Kogan has fallen three years in a row.

GATE3

Who is gaining shoppers fastest: Amazon, Temu or Shein?

Announcement

Temu and Shein grow faster in percentage terms, but Amazon added as many new shoppers in a year as Temu did, about 900,000.

Roy Morgan counts the Australians aged 14 and over who bought from each retailer in a 12-month period. In the year to June 2025, Amazon had 8.8 million shoppers, Temu 4.7 million and Shein 2.6 million. In the seat map below, every 100,000 shoppers get one seat; red seats are the shoppers each platform gained in a year.

Amazon and Temu each gained about 900,000 shoppers in a year, but Amazon's cabin is still almost twice the size.

Understand Temu's shoppers before you apply to its local seller program. Roy Morgan estimates Temu's Australian sales at about A$2.6 billion in the year to June 2025, up from about A$1.6 billion, and people go there for price. Temu says more than half of its new local sellers make a first sale within 20 days, but a cot or stroller priced to protect its margin will sit beside very cheap goods. For most of our clients Temu is a route to watch, not the first flight. Amazon's fees by category are in our cost checklist.

Is TikTok Shop available in Australia yet?

Announcement

No. In October 2026 there is still no TikTok Shop for Australian shoppers, and TikTok has not announced a date.

TikTok Shop has been "coming soon" in Australia for more than two years. The status log below lists what has been said, when, and where it was reported.

Every update since 2024 says the same thing: no launch date for Australia.

That does not make TikTok irrelevant. It means the sale happens somewhere else. Pattern found that 54% of Australian shoppers start product research on Google, and 41% go straight to Amazon after seeing a product on social media. So a creator video should send people to a place where they can buy today: your own website, your Amazon listing or a retailer page. If you plan to work with Australian creators, read the disclosure rules in our Xiaohongshu guide first, or see how we run creator and KOL campaigns.

What do online marketplaces in Australia expect from a seller?

Announcement

Safe products and honest listings: the big marketplaces remove unsafe listings within two business days of a regulator's request, and the product stays your responsibility.

Joining a marketplace does not move your legal duties to the platform. If you import the goods, the law treats you as the manufacturer, and mandatory safety standards for cots, toys and button batteries apply whether the product sells on Amazon or on your own site (see our compliance guide). What marketplaces add is their own checks, and shoppers who have learned to be careful.

Three luggage tags every seller carries, on every platform.

RULES AND TRUST
SAFETY PLEDGE
6marketplaces

AliExpress, Amazon Australia, eBay Australia, Fruugo, Gumtree and Temu have signed the ACCC's Product Safety Pledge. They remove listings named by a regulator, plus identical unsafe listings, within 2 business days.

For a new brand, those numbers are an opening. Shoppers are wary, so a listing that shows the safety standard it meets, an Australian returns address and real reviews stands out. Never buy, swap or filter reviews: the ACCC treats fake or hand-picked reviews as misleading, on any platform.

Which marketplace should a baby, toy or home brand start with?

Fly one leg at a time: your own site and community first, then Amazon Australia, then a retailer marketplace, with Temu and TikTok Shop on the watch list.

This is our working order for consumer brands, not a statistic. It assumes you already hold stock in Australia (see our 3PL guide) and have your test reports ready.

Questions about online marketplaces in Australia

Is TikTok Shop available in Australia in 2026?

No. In October 2026 TikTok Shop has no storefront for Australian shoppers and TikTok has not announced a launch date. A TikTok spokesperson said in 2024 there were no plans for that year, and later reports have not changed that. Use TikTok to be discovered, and send people to a site where they can buy.

Which online marketplace has the most shoppers in Australia?

Amazon. In Pattern's 2026 survey, 60% of Australian shoppers had bought on Amazon in the past year, ahead of eBay (51%), Temu (47%) and Shein (30%). Roy Morgan counted 8.8 million Amazon shoppers aged 14 and over in the year to June 2025.

Can an overseas brand join Temu's local seller program in Australia?

The program opened in July 2025 to Australian-registered sellers with stock held in Australia. An overseas brand usually needs a local company or a local partner, and stock in an Australian warehouse, before it can apply.

Can I sell on Myer or Big W's website as an outside brand?

Yes, both run marketplaces for outside sellers. Big W Market opened in November 2023 through Woolworths MarketPlus, and Myer moved to a new curated marketplace on Mirakl from May 2026 that adds prams, cots and mattresses. Approval is selective, so expect to show sales history, reviews and safety test reports.

Do marketplace sellers in Australia have to meet product safety standards?

Yes. Mandatory safety standards apply to the product whichever website sells it, and the importer is treated as the manufacturer. Six marketplaces, including Amazon Australia, eBay and Temu, have signed the ACCC's Product Safety Pledge and remove unsafe listings within two business days of a regulator's request. This is general information, not legal advice.
