Launching in Australia: which sales channels to start with, from Xiaohongshu and WeChat groups to Amazon and retail stores

Step 05 of our six-step series. You do not need every channel on day one. Here is how local parents find and buy a stroller, a cot or a toy, what each channel is good at, what it costs, and a 30-day countdown to launch day.

In shortWhen launching in Australia, you do not need every sales channel at once. Start in one community where parents already talk to each other. Add one marketplace and your own website so people have a safe place to buy. Go to retail stores once you have reviews and sales to show.

You have checked the market, met the safety rules, rewritten the brand for local parents and found a warehouse. Now you have to choose where to sell. Many overseas brands either open every channel at once or wait for a big retailer to say yes. Both waste money. This guide uses everyday products (strollers, cots, toys and home goods) to show a cheaper order.

THE BUYER

How do Australian parents find and buy a product like yours?

SHORT ANSWER

On a phone first, in a shop second, and in several places before they pay.

Picture a mum in Melbourne who needs a compact stroller. She will not see one ad and buy. She will meet your product on about five screens, and behind each screen is a different channel.

FIVE SCREENS BEFORE THE ORDERONE MUM, ONE STROLLER · AN ILLUSTRATION

A parent meets your product about five times before she pays, and each time it is on a different channel.

  1. 1Sees it
    Social feed

Another mum posts the stroller folded into a small car boot.

53% of Australian adults use Instagram and 30% use TikTok (ACMA, 2026). Xiaohongshu has more than 700,000 monthly users in Australia (ABC News, 2025).

  2. 2Asks about it
    Group chat

She asks her WeChat mums' group: has anyone used this brand?

68% of online shoppers use social media to discover, research or compare products. Among 18 to 39-year-olds it is 88% (IAB Australia, 2026).

  3. 3Checks it
    Search and reviews

She searches the brand name, reads reviews and compares prices.

92% of online shoppers use a search engine, an online store or both to find and compare products (IAB Australia, 2026).

  4. 4Touches it
    A store

If she can, she pushes one around a shop floor.

Baby Bunting has 80 stores, and about three quarters of its sales are still made in store (Baby Bunting, FY26).

  5. 5Buys it
    Checkout

She orders where the price, delivery and returns feel safest.

57% of online shoppers bought from a marketplace in the past year (IAB Australia, 2026). 8.8 million Australians bought from Amazon in a year (Roy Morgan, 2025).

Sources: ACMA, How we communicate, February 2026 (adults, six months to June 2025); ABC News, 20 March 2025; IAB Australia and Pureprofile, Commerce and Discovery Report 2026 (1,079 online shoppers), as reported by eCommerceNews, 6 July 2026; Baby Bunting, FY26 annual report (FY26 is its financial year to June 2026; online sales were 25.3% of the total); Roy Morgan, September 2025 (12 months to June 2025).

Two things follow. No single channel does the whole job, so a launch needs a few channels that hand over to each other. And the first screens are social, so that is where a launch starts. If nobody is talking about the stroller, nobody searches for it.

THE ORDER

Which sales channels come first when launching in Australia?

SHORT ANSWER

Community first, then one marketplace and your own website, then retail stores.

It is tempting to start where the most shoppers are. Look at the sizes first.

HOW MANY PEOPLE EACH CHANNEL REACHESCIRCLE AREA = NUMBER OF PEOPLE

The biggest channels are where a new brand is hardest to see. Start with the smallest circle.

On Amazon your stroller sits beside hundreds of others, and a new listing has no reviews. In a community of ten thousand parents, a few dozen families who try it and post about it get noticed. Their posts become your first reviews, your first real photos and your first search results. So start in the small circle and work outwards: community, then a marketplace and your own site, then stores.

Mainstream apps matter too: 78% of Australian adults use Facebook and 71% use YouTube (ACMA, 2026). But paid reach works better once there are real reviews to point to. For the Chinese-speaking community in detail, read how to reach Asian consumers in Australia.

THE JOBS

What is each launch channel actually good at?

SHORT ANSWER

Each one does one or two jobs well. None does all five.

Read the grid by columns. For each job, choose one channel you can do well. A common first mix for a baby or home brand is the red dots: Xiaohongshu to be seen, a WeChat group or parents' community to be trusted, Amazon to be compared and bought, and your own website to bring people back. That is four channels with four different jobs. Stores join when you have something to show them.

TikTok is strong for being seen, but TikTok Shop had not launched in Australia as of March 2026 (Marketing-Interactive, 2026), so shoppers still leave the app to buy.

THE BILL

What does each sales channel cost you?

SHORT ANSWER

A marketplace takes a small slice and leaves you the work. A store takes a big slice and does the selling.

Channels charge in different ways, so compare them on one thing: what comes out of every A$100 a shopper pays.

WHO KEEPS WHAT, OUT OF A$100TEN A$10 NOTES IN EACH ROW

Out of every A$100 a shopper pays, a marketplace fee is about A$11 to A$13. A baby retailer keeps about A$41.

Baby products over A$20: 11%. Toys: 12%. Furniture: 12%. Home and kitchen: 13%. A Professional account is A$49.95 a month. Storage, delivery and ads are extra, and they are yours to pay.

About A$41

Baby Bunting kept 41.2% of its sales after paying for the goods in FY26. That pays for 80 stores, staff and stock that does not sell. Your own wholesale terms are negotiated and will differ.

But nobody arrives by accident. You pay in content, ads and time.

Sources: Amazon Australia, Selling on Amazon pricing page, viewed October 2026 (fees before GST); Baby Bunting, FY26 annual report, 14 August 2026. Not like for like: a referral fee is charged on each sale, while a gross margin is what a retailer keeps across everything it sells, including its own labels. An illustration, not a quote.

On a marketplace you keep more of each sale, but you carry the stock, the delivery bill from step 04 and the cost of being found. In a store you keep less, but the store brings the shoppers. Either way, work back from the shelf price to check there is still a margin, as in step 01.

One more cost is easy to miss: platforms change. Wesfarmers closed its Catch marketplace in 2025, and Woolworths said the same year that it would shut MyDeal (The Nightly, 2025). Do not let one platform hold all your customers. Your own website and your own community list are the two things nobody can switch off.

THE STORE

How do you get a new brand into Australian retail stores?

SHORT ANSWER

Show that it already sells, and expect to be asked for something exclusive.

For baby products the main specialist is Baby Bunting. It has 80 stores across Australia and New Zealand and made A$556.0 million in sales in its 2026 financial year (FY26). By its own estimate it holds about 20% of a A$1.8 billion market for hard goods such as prams, cots and car seats (Baby Bunting, 2026).

BABY BUNTING'S SHELF, FY26ONE BOX = ABOUT 10% OF SALES

Half of what the biggest baby retailer sells is its own label or exclusive to it.

  • Own labels and exclusive products: 50.3% of sales
  • All other brands: 49.7%
  • 25.3% of its sales are online, up from 23.1% a year earlier.
  • Sales through its online marketplace for outside sellers grew 38.1% to A$7.7 million.
Source: Baby Bunting Group, FY26 annual report and results, 14 August 2026. The 49.7% is 100% minus 50.3%.

What this means for you: a store buyer has limited open shelf and will ask why your stroller deserves a place. Bring three things: reviews from local parents, your sales so far, and proof that the product meets the safety standard. Be ready for the buyer to ask for an exclusive colour or model. Some retailers also run an online marketplace for outside sellers. Ask about it, because it can be a first step before shelf space.

THE COUNTDOWN

What should the 30 days before launching in Australia look like?

SHORT ANSWER

One job a week, and your community gets in before the public does.

30-DAY LAUNCH COUNTDOWNNUMBERS = DAYS TO GO

Four weeks of quiet work, then a launch week that opens to your community first.

LAUNCH CALENDAR
  1. WEEK 1
    Lock the offer

Final price, launch bundle, stock checked into the warehouse, returns page live.

  2. WEEK 2
    Send samples

Send samples to a few dozen local families and creators. Ask for honest posts, and make sure gifted products are disclosed.

  3. WEEK 3
    Build the listings

Your marketplace listing and your own product page, in Australian English, with the real photos from week 2.

  4. WEEK 4
    Warm up

Answer questions in the groups. Open a waitlist or pre-order. Name the launch date.

  5. LAUNCH WEEK
    Open in two steps

Day 2: early access for the community. Day 0: open to everyone.

  • Community early access
  • Launch day

Example: if launch day is Black Friday, 27 November 2026, day 30 is 28 October. Australians spent A$1.5 billion online over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend in 2025, and 3.1 million households shopped (Australia Post, 2025).

Plan: DAY Concept's launch method. Sales figures: Australia Post, Aussies set a new cyber weekend record, 9 December 2025.

Two notes on week 2. First, the rule. If you pay a creator or give them a free product, the post must say so. In March 2026 an online retailer paid A$39,600 in penalties after the ACCC alleged it had told influencers not to disclose free products (ACCC, 2026). This is general information, not legal advice. Second, the saving. Samples are usually the best-value marketing you will buy.

Big sale days are noisy. That is why the community opens two days early: your first buyers and first reviews are in before the crowd arrives.

Questions about launching in Australia

Which sales channel should I start with when launching in Australia?

Start with one community where your buyers already talk, such as Xiaohongshu, a WeChat group or a parents' community. Add one marketplace and your own website so people have a safe place to buy. Approach retail stores once you have reviews and sales to show.

Do I need to sell on Amazon Australia?

It helps, because shoppers compare there. Roy Morgan estimates 8.8 million Australians bought from Amazon in the 12 months to June 2025. Amazon's referral fee is 11% for baby products over A$20 and 12% for toys, and a Professional account is A$49.95 a month (Amazon Australia, 2026). Storage, delivery and advertising are extra.

Is Xiaohongshu worth using in Australia?

Yes, if Chinese-speaking families are among your first buyers. ABC News reported more than 700,000 monthly users in Australia in March 2025. It is a place to be seen, not a checkout, so pair it with somewhere to buy.

How do I get my product into Baby Bunting or other Australian baby stores?

Bring proof: local reviews, sales so far and compliance documents. Baby Bunting has 80 stores, and 50.3% of its FY26 sales were its own labels or exclusive products, so buyers often ask for an exclusive colour or model.

Can I pay influencers or send free products for reviews in Australia?

Yes, but the post must make the payment or gift clear, and reviews must be genuine. The ACCC says businesses must not mislead consumers by failing to disclose when an influencer has been paid, and payment includes free products (ACCC, 2026). This is general information, not legal advice.
